GÉOL. Intervention de gaz et de vapeurs d'origine interne dans le remaniement et la cristallisation de matières minérales qui ont produit des roches endogènes ou certains minéraux (d'apr. FOUC.-RAOULT Géol. 1980).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1932 géol. (Lar. 20e). Empr. à l'angl. pneumatolysis «id.» att. en 1896 (PHILIPPS & LOUIS ds NED Suppl.2), lui-même comp. de pneumato-, du gr. , - «souffle, air», v. l'élém. pneumat(o)- et de -lysis, du gr. «action de délier», v. suff. -lyse.
DÉR. Pneumatolytique, adj., géol. Qui se rapporte à la pneumatolyse; formé par pneumatolyse. Gîte pneumatolytique.
